a stunning original pastel by Zoe Mozert. Zoe's real name was Alice Adelaide Moser and she was one of the few female students Howard Pyle took under his wing. She was a pastel master, one of the few female glamour/pin-up artists and arguably the most famous. She made hundreds of covers, mostly for movie mags and pulps: True Story, Paris Nights, Romantic Movie Stories, Screen Book, and most notably, True Confessions, the title of which was used for a Carole Lombard film (Mozert supplied artwork for the movie). She also contributed covers to Hearst's American Weekly. Ads for Cole of California, Wing Cigarettes, Irresistible Beauty Aids, Raleigh Cigarettes. She became one of Brown and Bigelow's most popular calendar artists during the 40s and 50s. You can find more of Zoe's bio info at American Art Archives.com.
This pastel appears to be a study for one that recently sold for over $11,000 at auction. Zoe's subject in this pastel, Jane Wyatt, co-starred in the 1954 TV series "Father Knows Best" as Margaret Anderson. The finished version of this piece (pictured in the last image) has brown eyes and this one has blue. She may have realized her mistake with Jane's eye color and had to start over. This study has every bit as much presence - its absolutely wonderful. I believe Zoe's portraits of Jane Wyatt are definitely some of her best! The prior owner acquired this from Zoe and had her sign it late in her life. I guarantee the authenticity and originality of this piece. It has been professionally framed & matted. It measures 31.25" x 25.25" overall framed, and the pastel measures aprx 23" x 17". This will be shipped without the glass for the pastel's protection. I can ship it with the frame or without, if you would like to save on shipping. You will only be charged the ACTUAL shipping costs.
